
Dr Federica Barbieri
Federica teaches modules in English descriptive grammar, sociolinguistics, and discourse analysis. Her main research interests are in sociolinguistics, discourse-pragmatic variation, cross-cultural pragmatics, classroom discourse, and corpus linguistics. Federica also supervises postgraduate research, serves on the faculty research ethics committee, and is exams officer for applied linguistics.

Dr Jill Boggs
Jill specialises in second language writing and corrective feedback and teaches in areas such as language teaching methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Jill is subject lead for English language and Applied Linguistics.

Dr Alexia L. Bowler
Alexia teaches stylistics, the history of English, language planning and policy, and working with practitioners. She is admissions tutor for the subject area, as well as employability lead, outreach organiser and social media coordinator (blog, Instagram and YouTube). Her research interests lie in genre stylistics in film; language, gender and the media; feminism(s); women filmmakers, and adaptation.

Dr Benjamin A. Jones
Ben teaches discourse analysis, media linguistics and phonology for the department. His research interests include dialectology and the Welsh English dialect as well as stylistics and discourse analysis. He is the Foundation year programme director for the School of Culture and Communication.

Prof. Tess Fitzpatrick
Tess teaches in the area of forensic linguistics and working with practitioners at undergraduate, and research methods on the MA TESOL. Her main research interests are in second language vocabulary acquisition and testing, vocabulary processing and lexical research to contexts of ageing, dementia, and word choices in medical care.

Dr Xuehong (Stella) He
Stella teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules in second language acquisition, vocabulary studies, and statistics. Her main research interests include instructed second language acquisition and vocabulary teaching and learning. She is co-director of the MA TESOL programme and academic coordinator of the study abroad programme.

Prof. Nuria Lorenzo-Dus
Nuria teaches in the area of discourse analysis, corpus-assisted discourse studies, multimodality, digital communication, online influence and manipulation and pragmatics and media communication. Her research explores how language is used in digital spaces, particularly in relation to online safety and communication. She collaborates on interdisciplinary projects and contributes to academic and public discussions in her field.

Dr Vivienne Rogers
Vivienne teaches in the area of psycholinguistics and second language acquisition. Her research focuses on individual differences in second language acquisition, which a particular focus on language learning aptitude and memory. Her research often involves experimental methods including reaction times and eyetracking. She is the postgraduate admissions and research officer for English language and Applied linguistics.

Dr Cornelia Tschichold
Cornelia teaches in the areas of grammar, first language acquisition, research methods, and language technologies such as ChatGPT. Her research is in the field of computer assisted language learning. She is currently programme director for the undergraduate degree and Academic Integrity Lead for the School.
